The Challenge

The challenge for this brand design/identity project was to use craigslist to find a niche market that can benefit from a novel app design. In my case, I chose to target people who collect vinyl records.

Process

The process for this project involved several steps: the usual sketches and iterations for developing the name/logo/color palette/typeface, but also sketching wireframes and prototyping the app itself. I purposefully chose a user group that I do not relate to, for I don’t collect vinyl myself. Therefore, the first logical step was to understand the main reasons why people collect vinyl: a sense of nostalgia, a difference in sound quality, and a liking for the way that records change sound, or age, over time. The name for the app (Served On A Platter) stems from the fact that the surface of a record player where the record is placed is called a platter: a piece of information that collectors will know, but others will not. Although this was primarily a branding assignment, shown here is some of the work from both a brand identity and UX standpoint.
